Best Vegan Milk
By Andrew Gubb
There are a lot of different vegan milks to choose from, and different ones are best for different people. My personal choice is rice milk, though I use almond milk and coconut milk sometimes too. I also have kamut milk for a treat once in a while, though it's too expensive to have often.
Best Vegan Milk Substitutes
I think vegan milk substitutes taste a lot better than the milk I used to drink. Rice milk, particularly, has a very rich, sweet taste. It's generally made from sprouted rice, which is what gives it its sweetness and taste and which also gives it a lot of health properties. You will notice that a cup of rice milk will make you feel good and energised.
Rice milk, while being one of the best vegan milks out there, is very variable in quality from brand to brand. I can't say what brands you'll find in your country – here in Spain my choice would be Vitariz or Lima – but I would recommend that you taste around and see which one you like best.
Oat Milk As A Vegan Milk Substitute
Up there among the best vegan milks is oat milk, which one of my friends drinks a lot. I think it's a matter of personal taste deciding which of the two (rice milk or oat milk) you like best. Both go very nicely in tea and have a pleasant milky taste.
Oat milk also varies quite a bit between brands. I've tried one which basically tasted like a porridge smoothie. But most brands of oat milk are very nice.
Coconut Milk As A Vegan Milk Substitute
Coconut milk was never sold as a vegan milk substitute, but you can definitely use it as such. Actually, in consistency it tends to be closer to a vegan cream substitute than a vegan milk substitute. I like it best in coffee, where its intense flavour doesn't drown out any weaker flavours. I also use it occasionally instead of cream when making chocolate truffles.
Almond Milk As A Vegan Milk Substitute
I gave up using almond milk as a substitute for milk in my tea after I found that it would always “split” and not give me the smooth appearance I wanted from my tea. Almond milk is very tasty on its own, though, and can be made at home.
Almond milk concentrate, however, doesn't cause this problem with tea, so I have a small pot of it which I use sometimes. It's sweetened so a sweet tea has to be what I feel like having in that moment. I hear some brands in the USA have unsweetened raw almond milk concentrates. You know, sometimes I wonder if it'd be good to live in the USA.
One Of The Best Vegan Milk Substitutes – Kamut Milk
Talking of milks that split, I stopped using Kamut milk for my tea after it split once. I notice it doesn't always split, though, so I might use it again sometime.
Kamut milk has an absolutely gorgeous, rich, subtle flavour. The best way to drink it is alone, silently orgasming. Don't mix the milk with anything else, either. ;)
It's not surprising that kamut makes a great milk – the grains themselves have a milky flavour. Try them (cooked as if rice) if you get the chance – they really are delicious.
Honourable Mention For Best Vegan Milk Substitute: Soy Milk
I hate to say this, but the most popular vegan milk substitute is also the worst. Soy milk is neither tasty nor particularly healthy. It's long ago been disproven that we don't desperately need the high protein levels found in soy, and it's relatively unhealthy due to its phytate and isoflavanoids. (85% of non organic soy is GM, additionally).
The one benefit of soy milk is that it's cheap, and can be okay in a pinch. While it's not the best, I definitely won't turn it down if I'm stuck in a café with only soy milk substitute. Indeed, I appreciate it when they think of vegans.
