Properties Of Black Tourmaline

I heard from a friend called Weena originally about the properties of black tourmaline. She's a crystal fanatic, and she seems to know everything about every crystal there is.

According to her, black tourmaline is a great way of neutralising harmful vibrations from computers and cell phones. This was something I was very interested in achieving as I am quite sensitive to these vibrations, so I started using a piece of black tourmaline soon after learning this from her.

I also got a black tourmaline pendant for hanging from my mobile phone, though as of now I haven't used it. It seemed too precious to be hanging about in my pocket where it might get broken. (That's a physical property of black tourmaline: it's quite fragile).

Black tourmaline is a beautiful black mineral with a fibrous appearance and a hardness of 7 on the Moh's scale. Esoterically it's said to have the property of absorbing all sorts of negativity, from the previously mentioned technological vibrations to emotional and mental negativity too. When I hold a piece of black tourmaline, I feel the negativity being drawn out of my aura. It reminds me of the “void” which buddhist spirituality would have you focus on. Cool, dark, and infinite. A very beautiful gem in its own way.

I also feel very grounded by black tourmaline. In general black crystals have the property of grounding, and black tourmaline in particular makes me feel like I'm being “pulled together”, and my thoughts are being harmonised with the rest of my being.

Black tourmaline seems to clear out excessive thoughts and helps you have peace, that inner “void” I was talking about. I also wonder if the black energy has something to do with death.

Intuitively speaking I think I'd feel drawn to holding a black tourmaline in my hand if I had to contemplate the passing of a loved one. As well as drawing out the negative emotions that may be associated with death, the silence and solemnity of the stone would provide a fitting context to contemplate that which is passed. I think black tourmaline could be very healing in this situation.

I want to emphasise my feel that while the black of tourmaline represents the void, this is a positive void. Stones in general all hold a harmonic energy, unless they have been specifically cursed by someone – as they have grown in nature where everything is harmonious. So while black can represent negative or unwanted things, I think black tourmaline represents only the pure and the positive of the black colour. The depth of infinity, purity, peace and solemnity, as well as the “portal” to another world which is the true nature of death.

Contemplate black tourmaline to find peace with yourself and use it to heal when things have disappeared from your life. Let its black void absorb negative energy and protect you from noise and any invasive energies or psychic attacks (in the rare occasion that you might be attracting such things). Use it to heal your body from toxins, and if you are intuitive, I sense that it could be used to feel out your body (or that of another's) for toxins or disharmonies. After you've found them, you can send healing energy to them through the crystal.
