Eckhart Tolle was an absolutely revolutionary influence in my life. As a spiritual teacher, Eckhart Tolle is authentic, authoritative and incredibly powerful.

One of my friends said, “It's amazing how important Eckhart Tolle has been in the lives of so many people.” It's totally true. I hope this isn't going to come off as exaggerated but there is something almost magical about how his spiritual teachings find people at the exact right moment in their lives, bringing such massive spiritual growth.

I never used to be into spirituality. For me spirituality was a con, made up of fake teachers and stupid followers. I was a believer in what you might called fundamentalist science – what N. Grossman called “fundamaterialism”. I just couldn't see spirituality having any place in reality. We are smart monkeys – I thought – and the Universe is an unintelligent machine in which life happened by accident.

But I was, at the same time, searching desperately for something I couldn't put a name to – something which nowadays I call spirituality.

I managed to touch on some Buddhist concepts. I liked the atheist branch of Buddhism which let me have my own beliefs while still bringing in spiritual teachings. I found the concept of mindfulness very interesting, and made use of it in my life.

It wasn't long before I found Eckhart Tolle's “The Power of Now”. What an incredible book that was. Like the Buddhist teachings I had read before, Eckhart Tolle's books allowed me to have my own beliefs. (They mentioned a few concepts which made me uncomfortable but mostly focused on things that were context-neutral and easy for me to verify as true). As I read those books, I felt the truth of Eckhart Tolle's words in such a powerful way – a way that made me sure that I had found something incredibly significant.

How can I describe Ekhart Tolle's teachings? I'd recommend you try them out for yourself to really experience them. It really is something you experience. It's almost like there is some energy that goes beyond the words, beyond the spiritual teachings, and which draws you into the state of spiritual awakeness in and of itself. Reading one of Eckhart Tolle's books is a very meditative experience, and very enjoyable.

The words don't get old; you can read them a hundred times and they will still feel fresh and alive. You can keep getting new realisations from Eckhart Tolle's stuff again, and again, and again: conceivably for the rest of your life.

Eckhart Tolle's actual spiritual teachings are refreshing. In a world of pretentious spiritual teachers trying to be high and mighty, Eckhart Tolle comes off as both humble and candid. He recounts his experiences searching for the truth and his sudden spiritual revelations, and lets the reader feel on his level (while making it clear that he has something of incredible value to share).

The content of the spiritual teachings can be said to come down to this:

Live in the moment. Connect with your senses and experience and live in that space rather than living principally in the mind. A large part of humanity's ills comes from thinking too much and not being in the present moment, but there is hope: anyone can grow in spiritual awareness with the right teachings and some dedicated effort.

That's a rough summary of what the book meant for me, anyway. There is more – especially more depth than I can transmit with just these words. I changed radically as a person from reading Eckhart Tolle's teachings. The effects of the book have been deep and resounding – and I still gain more realisations from Eckhart Tolle's stuff nowadays.

In summary, I used to be suffering, searching for an answer, and now, I feel that somehow – I don't need to search anymore. I can't say I've found and answer, but I can say I don't feel that I have to search anymore. If you read or listen to Eckhart Tolle, you might get what I mean.

If you want to listen to Eckhart Tolle speak, he has narrated his own books as well as created several pieces which are exclusively audiobooks. I think his message is even more powerful when you hear him speak (and even more still on video). Audible (the biggest vendor worldwide of downloadable audiobooks) will give you a free audiobook with this link, and you can search for and get for free any one of Eckhart Tolle's audiobooks. It's risk free and I can personally vouch for Audible.

If you prefer to read a book, I'd recommend you read his first book which took the world by storm: The Power of Now.

I just wrote a hub that compares the similarities of psychology, Scientology and the teachings of Echart Tolle. Scientology, done by Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Clint Eastwood, explains that attention units get trapped in the past due to traumatic events. When the upset from these events is released, then those trapped attention units return to the present moment where they belong.
