The 80/10/10 Diet

By Andrew Gubb

The 80/10/10 Diet is a diet based on eating raw vegan food with a particular proportion of carbohydrate, fat, and protein (80%, 10%, and 10%). Actually, the 80 is a minimum, and the 10s are maximums.

The 80/10/10 Diet isn't an original concept exactly. Low fat raw food diets based on fruit (which describes the 80/10/10 Diet) have existed ever since there have been people wise enough to follow them. Many people have come to the concept just by following the call of their own body.

However, the 80/10/10 Diet is a way that the low fat raw food diet has been “packaged” so to speak, and, I must say, it has been packaged extraordinarily well. People have found remarkable results from the method described in “The 80/10/10 Diet”. It wouldn't be over the top to say it's radically changed people's lives.

I know it's changed my life. After a couple of years of following the 80/10/10 Diet as closely as I could, I can now declare myself officially cured of Crohn's disease – a disease considered to by incurable by conventional sources. It's been known to cure loads and loads of other diseases, including cancer.

I have to steer clear of making too many unbelievable statements at once. Perhaps I should direct you to a documentary which will help this sink in.

Simply Raw” documents the story of 10 normal people with diabetes who take the challenge to go raw for 30 days. All of them find out that they can give up their medication within this time.

Bear in mind that this is just the standard raw diet and not the 80/10/10 Diet. The 80/10/10 Diet has even more benefits than the standard raw diet. It's amazing.

How To Follow The 80/10/10 Diet?

The 80/10/10 Diet can be followed by eating sufficient quantities of fruit and supplementing that with vegetables, preferably tender ones such as lettuce or spinach. This takes some practise, as to get sufficient calories on just fruit and vegetables you need to eat a much larger volume of food as you normally would: breakfast one day might be 1 KG of bananas, or 4 KG of melon. It's best to count calories until you can be sure you are getting a minimum of 2000 calories a day. If you find yourself hungry or craving cooked food, you are not eating enough.

To get an 80/10/10 proportion of carbohydrate, protein and fat, you'll also need to count calories a little. I don't believe in being too anal about all of this. Basically, make some rough calculations about the amount of fat you can eat a day (don't worry about the protein) and stick with it, roughly. For a 2000 calorie diet, you are allowed 1/3 of a medium avocado or 15 almonds. Don't weight it, just do it by eye. Eventually you'll even get used to listening to what your body tells you about the fat you're eating and be able to eat moderate amounts easily.

If you have trouble removing the fat from your diet, I'd suggest you do a limited-fat raw diet while you are transitioning. 30% fat (2 avocadoes a day) won't be worse than your previous diet, so feel free to go with it. So long as you can say that fruit is your main food, you'll be able to get to 80/10/10 easily enough. The problems start when you rely on fat to satiate yourself.

To find out the exact details of the 80/10/10 diet, I suggest you read the book. It also contains lots of science about good diet and some convincing testimonials as to the benefits of the 80/10/10 Diet. I would say that “The 80/10/10 Diet” is a truly classic diet book.

You may also be interested in the works of Victoria Boutenko. Her philosophy fits well into the 80/10/10 diet philosophy (though it doesn't put a strict limit on fat), and you'll find her style inspiring and motivating. I'd say her writing is the “right brain” to “The 80/10/10 Diet”'s powerful “left brain”.
